    First meeting in the East

Installation view of the Performed exhibition at Wysing

Just heading back from the first meeting of the East group. It has been a day of really rich conversation, and the following emerged (according to my notes at least) as some of the key themes for future consideration:

    • Market Development
    • Audience Development (interestingly there is no Audience Development agency in the East)
    • Diversity (workforce and audience diversification)
    • Support for artists (building on the excellent Escalator programme led by Wysing Arts Centre) and talent retention
    • Information and Communications (signposting was a term used by several people)

The meeting was also an opportunity for people to discuss the Contemporary Art Society’s report on the potential for developing the market for contemporary visual art in the East. The commissioning of the report played an important part in the process of bringing people together, and it’s findings are clearly going to feed into where they go together next.

Coincidentally I met with Paul Hobson at the Contemporary Art Society offices last week. They’re doing lots of work, all over the country, helping to build markets outside of London. We’ll be in contact regularly and I’ll be sure, dear reader, to pass on any important updates.

I had a really interesting chat with Dawn Giles (a colleague at Arts Council England, who is leaving to head-up Bedford Arts) about where Education ‘sits’ in the discussions nationally. Dawn talk about the need to reconsider education and audience development as a component of curatorial practice. Always insightful and on the pulse, I’ll be sad to see Dawn leave our team, but very happy for Bedford.
